Mentorship

Welcome to the SWRO mentorship program!

Mentorship is available for those who are completing or have completed medical or physics residency in Radiation Oncology, as well as students interested in pursuing a career in this field.

The Goals of Our Mentorship Program Are:

To support and guide our members as they progress throughout training

To enhance professional and personal development

To build radiation oncology leaders of tomorrow

Program Description

Effective mentorship is likely one of the most important determinants of career success. SWRO recognizes that training women physician leaders requires communication of “unwritten rules” of successful career advancement, particularly with a focus on the needs of women in radiation oncology.

SWRO wants to promote successful mentor-mentee interactions, which includes support, challenge, and a vision of the mentee’s future career. SWRO mentors encourage mentees to think strategically about their careers and resources necessary for different purposes at different stages of their career development. Together, we are committed to mentoring the next generation of women physician leaders.

Through our mentorship program you can both request a mentor and/or sign up to serve as a mentor in your desired area of interest.

Once a mentorship relationship is established, the mentor and mentee will receive a sample action plan. The mentee will set up a time to meet with their mentor at a time convenient for both. At this initial meeting, goals and expectations of the relationship will be discussed.

Mentees are encouraged to meet with their mentors at least 2 times a year (ideally 3-4 times). Meetings should be initiated by the mentee. Prior to each meeting, an agenda should be created by the mentee. At each meeting, the action plan should be reviewed and updated accordingly. The mentor should provide valuable, constructive feedback to the mentee.

Please note that discussions between mentees and mentors are confidential.

Mentorship relationships may be short or long-term, depending on the shifting career paths of both the mentor and mentee.
